Cubs Recall Justin Steele, DFA Brandon Workman

The Cubs have long followed a strategy of going cheap on bullpen pickups and it’s paid dividends on occasion. That wasn’t the case with Brandon Workman, who struggled with both command and control over 10 appearances. He walked seven batters and allowed 12 hits, including four multi-hit outings, over just eight innings of work.

The 32-year-old righty had allowed three runs in back-two back appearances against the Braves, prompting the Cubs to designate him for assignment Thursday. He could remain with the organization assuming he clears waivers, but the Cubs really need to start looking at younger pitchers with more upside.

Enter Justin Steele, who has been recalled to take the open spot in the bullpen. Steele impressed in his debut, showing off a slider that spun more than nearly any other lefty in MLB, and he’s been in the system for a while so it’s time to give him a chance to sink or swim.
