Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/13/21): Cubs 2, Cardinals 0 – Davies, Cubs Shutout/Sweep Cardinals
The Cubs went into Sunday’s affair with a chance to complete a three-game sweep of the Cardinals in front of a full house at Wrigley. An excellent Zach Davies start and sloppy St. Louis defense produced just that desired outcome.
Chicago’s only rally began with an Eric Sogard 3rd inning double. He scored when Paul DeJong booted a Joc Pederson grounder, then Anthony Rizzo added a run-scoring single to make it 2-0.
That was plenty for Davies, who gave up nothing into the 7th. Ryan Tepera and the increasingly nasty Craig Kimbrel finished the shutout/sweep. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Won
Davies made his best start in a Cubs uniform just a few days after what had been his best start.
Key Moment
Yadier Molina grounded out against Tepera with two on and two on in the 7th to preserve a 2-0 lead.
Stats That Matter
- Davies is really locking in: 6.2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 6 K, and 2 BB.
- Cardinals starter Carlos Martínez went seven strong innings.
- Kimbrel was touching 99 mph on the radar gun.
Bottom Line
The Cubs got a reeling Cardinals team and buried them. Also, the starting pitching is looking better.
On Deck
The Cubs start a four-game series in New York Monday at 6:10pm CT. Jake Arrieta faces a yet to be named Mets starter in a game airing on ESPN, Marquee, and 670 The Score.
