Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/5/21): Phillies 13, Cubs 3 – Same Story as Cubs Lose 10th Straight

Zach Davies took the mound against Matt Moore in the series opener hoping to continue his impressive run through May and June while ending a nine-game team skid. In his previous 15 outings, Davies went 4-4 with a 3.67 ERA and a 1.26 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Jake Marisnick opened the scoring in the 2nd with a solo shot to center, but the Phillies answered right back in the 3rd with one of their own. Javier Báez gave the Cubs a 2-1 advantage with a double in the bottom half of the inning, then Philadelphia tied the game at two with their second home run of the night when they took their next turn.

Davies was relieved by Rex Brothers in the 6th after allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Immediately following Davies’ departure, the Phillies took their first lead when Andrew McCutchen doubled to left. Later in the inning, the visitors tacked on another to give them a two-run advantage. They blew the game wide open with six runs in the 8th, but they weren’t done adding on.

Báez recorded his second RBI with a home run to center field that did nothing other than push the Cubs past two runs for the first time all season. Or maybe it just feels that way. The Phillies tacked on three more in the 9th for good measure as the Cubs lost by a final of 13-3. (Box Score)

Why the Cubs Lost

Another anemic performance at the plate and terrible relief pitching resulted in tonight’s loss.

Key Moment

In the bottom of the 1st, the Cubs had the bases loaded with one away but allowed Moore to escape the jam by striking out twice to end the inning. Ultimately, it didn’t matter all that much as the bullpen allowed six runs in the 8th.

• Surprisingly, Baez has drawn six walks in his last eight games.
• Brothers has allowed six earned runs in his last 7.1 innings pitched.

Bottom Line

For the last three weeks, the Cubs have been dreadfully bad on offense. If they can’t figure out how to get back on track, it would behoove them to begin the fire sale sooner than later.
