Cubs Sign OF Michael Hermosillo to 1-Year MLB Deal

A day after they non-tendered outfielder Michael Hermosillo, the Cubs announced that they have agreed to a one-year deal to keep him in Chicago. The 26-year-old grew up rooting for the Cubs and spent most of the 2021 season at Triple-A Iowa before getting a shot in mid-August. His time was cut short by a strained left forearm, but now he’ll get a chance to realize his dream again.

Hermosillo batted .306 with 10 homers, 10 doubles, and 29 RBI for Iowa, earning fan-favorite status for his energetic style of play. He appeared in 16 games with the Cubs, batting .194 with three homers and seven RBI before the injury ended his campaign on September 7.

Terms were not disclosed, but it’s a major league deal that pushes the 40-man roster to 39 and probably means another move will be coming soon. It was a little surprising that the Cubs kept Harold Ramirez on the roster rather than trying to pass him through waivers prior to the tender deadline, so perhaps we see that at whatever point the lockout ends.
