Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/19/22): Cubs 5, Padres 4- Davis Goes Deep in Win
The Cubs took on the Padres at Sloan Park on Saturday afternoon and took home another win behind a few homers. The big offensive blow came from the young player they hope will be a future star, Brennen Davis.
Lefty Justin Steele pitched effectively in two innings of work to start the game and first baseman Alfonso Rivas put the Cubs on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the 2nd. The Padres then took the lead on a pair of solo home runs against Jesse Chavez.
Davis put Chicago back ahead when he muscled an opposite-field three-run home run to right field in the 4th inning. San Diego would battle back and tie the score at 4-4 on a CJ Abrams dinger.
Another young prospect, Jared Young, gave the Cubs the lead back when he hit a solo home run in the 6th. That turned out to be enough and Chicago won 5-4. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Won
Both teams hit three home runs, but the Cubs had one more runner on base for theirs.
Key Moment
Davis displayed his beautiful swing and all-fields power that make him a top-20 MLB prospect. Just look at that smooth pop.

Stats That Matter
- Steele has every opportunity to earn a spot in the rotation: 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 K, and 1 BB.
- Rivas had two hits as he continues to fight for playing time in a still very wide-open Cubs lineup.
- Willson Contreras gunned out a baserunner and had a hit in a very nice afternoon.
Bottom Line
As of right now, there are jobs to be had in the Cubs lineup if someone steps up and hits. If things go as planned, Davis will have one of those roster spots by next spring.
On Deck
The Cubs make a trip to Camelback Ranch to battle the Dodgers on Sunday at 3:05pm CT on MLB Network. Alec Mills makes his first start of the spring as he tries to lock down a rotation spot.
