Cubs Place LHP Drew Smyly on Bereavement List, Select RHP Robert Gsellman from Iowa, DFA LHP Locke St. John
Just minutes before the lineup dropped today for the Chicago Cubs, Drew Smyly was placed on the bereavement list. Scott Effross will take the ball in his stead tonight against the Chicago White Sox.
That left a temporary spot open on the 26-man roster, which the Cubs have filled by selecting the contract of RHP Robert Gsellman from Iowa. In a corresponding move to make room on the 40-man, the Cubs have DFA’d Locke St. John.

Gsellman pitched for the New York Mets over six seasons, from 2016 to 2021. In his first two seasons with the Mets, Gsellman was primarily used as a starter and then transitioned into a relief role in 2018. He has a career 20-16 record along with a 4.59 ERA.
The Cubs signed Gsellman in March of 2022 to add pitching depth. You can read more about him here.
