Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/10/22): Padres 5, Cubs 4 – Cubs Comeback Effort Falls Just Short
After starting the season on the IL, Wade Miley finally made his Cubs debut Tuesday night in San Diego. After retiring the first two batters with relative ease on seven pitches, he proceeded to give up two hits and three walks putting the Cubs behind 2-0 early.
The Cubs responded in the top of the 3rd inning when Alfonso Rivas hit a home run to deep centerfield tying the score at 2.
Miley struggled again with command in the bottom of the 3rd, issuing back-to-back walks before Nola gave the Padres the lead again with a run-scoring single.
The Cubs would load the bases in the bottom of the 9th inning, down just one run after plating a run earlier in the inning. Frank Schwindel hammered a deep shot that looked like it was gone off the bat, only to be caught just short of the wall in left field. Game over. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
Miley’s short outing while giving up three runs, combined with the bullpen allowing two more runs gave the Padres a 5-3 lead they would not relinquish.
Key Moment
Frank Schwindel looked as if he got every bit of that ball when it left the bat. It fell just inches short and would’ve been a big break for a guy that really needed one, on a team that really needed one.
Stats That Matter
