Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/15/22): Cubs 3, D-Backs 2 – Steele Strikes Out 10, Cubs Win in 9th Again
The Cubs got an early jolt of offense with a Rafael Ortega leadoff home run to right field. Patrick Wisdom doubled the Cubs’ lead in the 2nd inning with a 414-foot solo shot to left field.
Justin Steele put together an impressive outing on the mound, regularly keeping the Diamondbacks off balance with his arsenal of pitches. After allowing just one hit through three innings he ran into some trouble in the 4th inning. The Diamondbacks scored two runs on two hits, a walk, and a fielding error by Ildemaro Vargas.
The game was tied 2-2 until the 9th. Patrick Wisdom got another extra base hit — a double to deep left field — and Frank Schwindel drove him in after a great at-bat to give the Cubs the lead. Rowan Wick got a ground ball double play to end the game. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Won
A strong start from Steele was just what the Cubs needed. This was his first quality start of the season, giving up just two runs on three hits.
Schwindel battled hard in his 9th inning at-bat and eventually slapped the ball into right field to give the Cubs the lead and the eventual win.
