Chicago Cubs Weekly Farm Report (5/16/22): Peyton Remy Does it Again, Matt Swarmer Ready for Chicago

The four Cubs affiliates recorded a total of 20 wins on the farm last week. I could probably go back in the historic schedules and try to find the last time that has been done but instead, I’ll just say I can’t remember it ever happening in my time covering the system. All those wins piling up directly coincides with strong performances from individuals at every level.

We are seeing top prospects James Triantos and Owen Caissie breaking out as middle-tier guys Bryce Ball and Jeremiah Estrada are trying to prove themselves. And even guys off the radar in Matt Mervis, Manny Espinoza, and Matt Swarmer are forcing us not to sleep on them. It is a fun time to be following this system.

Affiliate Records

  • Triple-A Iowa: 5-1 this week, 19-16 overall
  • Double-A Tennessee: 7-0 this week, 21-12 overall
  • High-A South Bend: 5-1 this week, 20-13 overall
  • Low-A Myrtle Beach: 3-3 this week, 22-11 overall

Trends and Notes

  • For the second time in the last couple weeks, a Cubs affiliate threw a no-hitter. After the incredible performance by the Pelicans staff, it was the Tennessee Smokies’ turn this week. Peyton Remy, Danis Correa, and Eury Ramos teamed up to deliver the historic performance. It was actually Remy’s second time being a part of a no-no as a Cub after doing it back in 2019 as a member of the South Bend Cubs.
  • Last week, I talked about how rare it was for the South Bend Cubs to record a six-game sweep. Minor league baseball doesn’t allow for many sweeps with the crazy-long series, but the Tennessee Smokies actually one-upped South Bend. Thanks to a doubleheader makeup, the Smokies actually executed the ultra-rare SEVEN game sweep. We see something new in this system every single week and I can’t imagine you’ll see a series like that again anytime soon.
  • The big bummer of the week was watching two top prospects get placed on the IL. Brennen Davis was sent to the list because of a sore lower back and my guess is that we will see him back in the lineup come June. We also saw Ed Howard go down with a pretty brutal-looking hip injury. An extended period of time on the shelf is not out of the question for Silk, unfortunately.
  • Shameless plug time as me and my co-host, Jimmy Nelligan, just dropped the 100th episode in our short history of recording the Growing Cubs Podcast. To imagine that enough of you are intrigued to the point where you would listen to over 100 hours of us talking Cubs prospects is almost inconceivable. We can’t thank you the listeners, guests, and the guys right here at Cubs Insider enough for the support.
