Watch: Cubs OF Prospect Owen Caissie Mashes 2 Homers
Owen Caissie got off to a slow start at High-A South Bend, going hitless in his first four games and batting just .129 through May 7. Then things started to click as he hit his first homer on May 10 and later had a five-game hit streak that included multiple hits in three of them. That streak ended on May 19, but he made up for it Friday by mashing two big homers.
Even if you weren’t already aware of Caissie’s power, that first dinger should give you a clue as to what he can do to a baseball. Despite having to go down and get a low offering, he was able to muscle it out well past the 405 mark in right-center. His next shot almost looks like a replay because it landed in nearly the same spot.
Still just 19 years old, the 6-foot-4 Canadian can add plenty of muscle to his lanky frame as he matures. Ranked as the Cubs’ No. 8 overall prospect, Caissie came over as part of the trade that sent Yu Darvish and Victor Caratini to San Diego. And while the deal still sticks in my craw on pure principle, this young slugger and the others that are now part of the Cubs system mitigate my indignation pretty thoroughly.
