Cubs Outright Robert Gsellman to Iowa

I’m a little late to the party on this one, but the Cubs have outrighted righty reliever Robert Gsellman to Triple-A Iowa after he was designated for assignment on May 30 and went unclaimed on waivers. This move kind of flew under the radar, what with Caleb Kilian‘s debut, Robel Garcia‘s defection to the KBO’s LG Twins, and Greg Deichmann mashing home runs on a daily basis.

RHP Robert Gsellman has cleared waivers and joined the Iowa Cubs. INF Levi Jordan has also been promoted to Triple-A from Double-A.

Having depth in the upper minors is never a bad thing and the Cubs always like keeping guys around whenever possible, so this all makes sense. In the end, though, it’ll be nice when they have more young pitchers coming up and squeezing out all that extra space for the guys who don’t appear to be a big part of the future.

The 28-year-old Gsellman is 0-2 with a 4.70 ERA in eight appearances for the Cubs and has struck out nine with three walks in 15.1 innings. He has logged the same number of innings in five appearances (four starts) with Iowa, striking out 12 with four walks.
