Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/6/22): Cubs 2, Brewers 1 – Sampson Sensational as Cubs Take Series

The Cubs hoped to stage an upset against Corbin Burnes and the Brewers on Wednesday afternoon. They got their own quality pitching performance from Adrian Sampson and were able to grab a series win.

Both Burnes and Sampson were outstanding, breezing through the first four innings. Keston Hiura made a terrific catch, crashing into the left field wall to rob P.J. Higgins of a go-ahead double in the 5th.

Sure enough, Hiura came to bat in the bottom of the frame and jumped on Sampson’s only mistake for a long solo home run. Chicago battled back against Brad Boxberger in the top of the 8th. Christopher Morel tripled and would score on a Rafael Ortega single to tie it.

The Cubs took the lead in the 9th when Higgins doubled off of Josh Hader to score Patrick Wisdom, who walked to lead off the inning. David Robertson came on in the bottom of the 9th and nailed down the save. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Won

Sampson was outstanding keeping his team in the game long enough for them to pull ahead and win.

Eye on the Future

  • Morel walked in addition to the triple Wednesday.
  • Alfonso Rivas doubled and singled off of Burnes.

Stats That Matter

  • Can’t emphasize enough just how good Sampson was on Wednesday: 5.2 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 5 K, and 0 BB.
  • The Cubs bullpen — a combination of Brandon Hughes, Chris Martin, Mychal Givens, and Robertson — was exceptional: 3.1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 4 K, 1 BB
  • Ortega only had one hit but it was a big one: 1-for-4, 1 RBI

Bottom Line

The Cubs have now taken four series in a row and five of their last six. They continue to be a thorn in the side of the Brewers. Sampson has been a pleasant surprise and is positioning himself as a possible option heading into 2023.
