Chicago Cubs Lineup (7/30/22): Smyly Pitching, Contreras DH, Happ in Left
The Chicago Cubs have been playing well lately — winners of seven of their last eight games — and are looking to gain at least a split in their series against the Giants with a win tonight.
Drew Smyly (3-5, 3.93 ERA) will be making his fourth start since returning from the IL earlier this month. He’s been pitching progressively better since his return, with his latest outing producing a quality start and a win after going six innings and giving up just one earned run.
Don’t expect Smyly to be around for the Cubs too long. He is very likely to be traded prior to the August 2 trade deadline. The Cubs completed their first trade deadline trade earlier today when they acquired INF Zach McKinstry for RHP Chris Martin.
The good news is that both Willson Contreras and Ian Happ, the Cubs’ biggest trade currency, are both in the lineup tonight. But, rest assured, the hug watch is on and will be all the way up until the deadline.
Rafael Ortega leads off tonight playing center, Contreras is DH, Seiya Suzuki is in right, Happ is in left, and Nico Noerner is at short. Patrick Wisdom is at third, Yan Gomes is catching, Alfonso Rivas is at first, and David Bote is at second.
First pitch is scheduled for 8:05pm CT from San Francisco. The game will be broadcast on Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score.
