Cubs Recall LHP Matt Dermody as 27th Man for Thursday’s Doubleheader
The Cubs have will have left-handed pitcher Matt Dermody with them in St. Louis as the 27th man for Thursday’s doubleheader. He was selected from Triple-A Iowa, optioned to Iowa, then recalled to provide a little extra bullpen depth. Dermody, who debuted with the Cubs with a single appearance in 2020, will wear uniform number 64.
The 32-year-old is 6-3 with a 3.74 ERA in 20 games (13 starts) for Iowa this season, striking out 70 and walking 18. In his last eight outings since June 17, he is 4-0 with a 1.21 ERA, 36 strikeouts, 10 walks, a .206 opponent batting average, and a .594 opponent OPS. Dermody struck out a season-high 10 batters in five innings July 9 at Indianapolis.
He initially joined the Cubs on a minors deal in August of 2020 and tossed a scoreless inning on September 6 against the Cardinals at Wrigley Field. The lefty pitched with Seibu in the Japan Pacific League last year before signing a minor league contract to return to the Cubs organization this past February.
Given the number of relievers the Cubs recently traded away, there’s a good chance Dermody will at least double his MLB innings total from two years ago.
