Cubs Recall Alfonso Rivas as 27th Man for Field of Dreams Game
The Cubs announced Thursday that infielder Alfonso Rivas has been recalled to serve as the 27th man for tonight’s Field of Dreams Game in Dyersville, Iowa. Rivas is in his fourth stint with the Cubs this season after he was on the major league roster from Opening Day-April 16, April 22-June 10, and June 18-July 31. He has played 71 games for Chicago in 2022, hitting .232 with four doubles, one triple, three home runs, and 24 RBI.
He’s been tearing it up at Triple-A, batting .351 with a .919 OPS, though he has just one homer in 61 plate appearances. The Cubs really need left-handed power, but Rivas hasn’t been able to supply that in 250 MLB plate appearances. With just four homers, five doubles, and a triple, Rivas has a career .086 ISO that ranks 404th out of 426 big leagers with at least 250 PAs since the start of last season.
Nick Madrigal is immediately above him with a .087 over 349 PAs, in case you were wondering.
With Matt Mervis waiting in the wings at Iowa and a 40-man roster crunch coming this offseason, Rivas is going to need to show the Cubs something over the next two months or so.
