Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/22/22): Cardinals 1, Cubs 0 – Cubs Get Full Monty Shutout by Cardinals
The Cubs were hoping to start a new winning streak against the red-hot Cardinals on Monday night. Unfortunately, Chicago came out on the wrong end of a pitching duel and went down to defeat.
Drew Smyly and Jordan Montgomery were very sharp from the beginning Monday keeping the game scoreless through six innings. The ageless Albert Pujols gave the Cardinals a lead with a solo home run in the top of the 7th.
Montgomery was absolutely dominant giving up just a single hit through eight innings of work. The Cardinals lefty came back out for the 9th inning and completed the shutout. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
Once again the Cubs offense completely no-showed, squandering a terrific effort from Smyly.
Eye on the Future
- Christopher Morel doubled for the Cubs only hit of the game in the 3rd inning.
Taking Note
- Drew Smyly was great against an explosive Cardinals lineup: 7 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 6 K, and 2 BB.
Bottom Line
Not sure where Albert Pujols found the fountain of youth but he should bottle that stuff. The Cubs should consider bringing back Smyly for 2023, he has been outstanding down the stretch.
