Kyle Hendricks Confirms Season Shutdown Due to Capsular Tear in Shoulder
Kyle Hendricks indicated after Sunday’s game that he might be done for the season, then he confirmed as much prior to Monday’s series opener against the Cardinals. He explained that an MRI had revealed a capsular tear in his right shoulder that has lengthened the rehab process. While the issue won’t require surgery, it will keep him from throwing for several weeks.
Kyle Hendricks says he has a capsular tear in his right shoulder, which lengthened the rehab process and prompted him to get shutdown.
It stems from a chronic issue, rather than happening on one pitch. Hendricks says he won’t need surgery. Will head to AZ in next weekish. #Cubs

“I’ll head to Arizona, that’s a little up in the air, in the next week or so,” Hendricks told reporters. “Once I get out there, hopefully it would be two, three, four weeks we’ll build up a strengthening program. My biggest goal is to definitely pick up a ball by the end of the season. At least be throwing, at least some type of throwing program. We don’t know how far, may get out to 120 feet.”
This makes all the sense in the world given Hendricks’ performance this season and the fact that the Cubs aren’t playing for another other than pride. Getting him back at full strength and pitching more like pre-2021 would be huge, especially if the Cubs make a splash in free agency and also get contributions from their prospects.
