Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/23/22, Game 2): Cardinals 13, Cubs 3 – St. Louis Smashes Cubs in Nightcap
The Cubs attempted to complete the sweep of the Cardinals in the second game of the doubleheader Tuesday night. St. Louis would not cooperate this time, going on a scoring spree in the middle innings to bury Chicago.
The Cardinals got to Adrian Sampson in the 4th inning putting up five runs before the frame ended. Nolan Arenado hit a solo shot and Tyler O’Neill had a two-run bomb for the big blows.
Jake Woodford allowed just a single run to the Cubs, who struggled again on offense. St. Louis tacked on a bunch more runs late and went on to a 13-3 victory. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
The Cardinals offense could only stay down for so long before it went off and once it did, the Cubs hitters were never going to come back.
Eye on the Future
- Nick Madrigal had two hits and a walk Tuesday.
- Nicholas Padilla made his major league debut and gave up a run in 1.2 innings.
Taking Note
- Not a good night for Sampson who gave up hard contact from the start: 3.1 IP, 5 R, 8 H, 0 K, and 0 BB.
Bottom Line
The Cardinals are a good team and games like this are going to happen. Adrian Sampson has been very solid and should not have one bad game held against him.
