Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/24/22): Cubs 7, Cardinals 1 – Cubs Win Behind Quality Spot Start

The Cubs were hoping to even their series with the Cardinals Wednesday night at Wrigley Field. With the help of an unexpected pitching performance Chicago was able to take home the victory.

The 2nd inning was where the Cubs mounted their only rally against Miles Mikolas, loading the bases with nobody out. Yan Gomes hit into a force out to bring home the first run and Nelson Velazquez doubled in another. Zach McKinstry drove in the third and final run of the inning with his own ground out.

Luke Farrell was surprisingly effective in his spot start for the Cubs on Wednesday, surrendering just a 5th inning solo home run to Lars Nootbaar. The bullpen took over in that frame and was sharp yet again.

McKinstry padded Chicago’s lead with a two-run home run off of Mikolas in the 7th. A Nico Hoerner single and a sacrifice fly from Gomes increased the advantage to 7-1 in the 8th. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Won

A solid appearance from a spot starter was the key to the win tonight. The offense came through in two big bases loaded situations.

Eye on the Future

  • McKinstry had three RBIs and a big home run that could jump start his bat.
  • Nico broke out of his mini-slump with a three hit game on Wednesday.
  • Brandon Hughes struck out the side in the 8th.

Taking Note

  • The Cubs got all they could’ve asked for from Farrell: 4.1 IP, 1 R, 6 H, 3 K, and 0 BB.
  • Big congratulations to legendary Cubs radio broadcaster Pat Hughes who found out he’s going to be inducted into the Cubs Hall of Fame.

Bottom Line

Chicago has done an excellent job of keeping the talented Cardinals hitters in check so far this series, with the exception of Tuesday night’s game. It’s good to see they’re not rolling over for a better team and are putting up a good fight.

On Deck

The rubber-match of the series is Thursday at 1:20pm CT. Marcus Stroman goes up against Dakota Hudson in a game available on MLB Network (out of market only) and Marquee Sports Network.
