Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/12/22): Cubs , Mets –
The Chicago Cubs needed a victory tonight to salvage a series win against the San Francisco Giants. Following a rain-filled day in the Chicago area that turned the Bears game into a muddy mess (which they won, by the way), the Cubs couldn’t muster enough offense to overcome another rocky bullpen outing.
Wade Miley was good through five innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five. The game was tied 1-1 when Hayden Wesneski came on in relief in the top of the 6th. Wesneski gave up two home runs, a solo shot in the top of the 7th to Thairo Estrada and a two-run homer in the top of the 8th to Wilmer Flores.
Seiya Suzuki blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the 8th inning, and the Cubs had two men on base in that same inning but could not convert them into runs. The Cubs ultimately drop the game and the series to the Giants. (Box Score)
Why the Cubs Lost
Just not enough offense, which has been a recurring theme for the Cubs this season.
Eye on the Future
- Wesenski showed he still has work to do before he can be considered a legitimate shut-down big leaguer: 3.2 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 2 HR, 88 pitches
- Suzuki had a long home run but left three runners on base
Taking Note
- The Cubs have yet to win a series in September, after winning five series in August.
Bottom Line
It’s starting to feel like the Cubs are just going through the motions to close out this season. There’s still plenty to be optimistic about, but I’m not sure we can say this season has been a success like Tom Ricketts would have us believe.
On Deck
The Cubs travel to New York to take on the Mets for a three-game series. Javier Assad will take the ball for the Cubs against Chris Bassitt for the Mets. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10pm CT on Monday night and the game will be broadcast on Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score.
