Chicago Cubs Lineup (9/22/22): Morel at Short, Bote at Third, Wesneski on Hill in Pittsburgh
Gather around kids while I tell you about the legend of Hayden Wesneski. That’s the phrase I conjure up in my head when I think about the potential of Wesneski and how the shocking trade of Scott Effross could play out. Sure, it was pretty surprising when the trade was announced (just listen to the reaction of Evan Altman and me when we learned about the trade live while recording The Rant Live Podcast), but the upside of Wesneski as a starter in the Cubs rotation has me absolutely giddy.
Wesneski will get the ball tonight in his second big-league start for the Cubs. His first start was exceptional; seven innings pitched, one run allowed on three hits and no walks while striking out seven batters. In three appearances for the Cubs, Wesneski has 2.30 ERA over 15.2 IP, 18 Ks, and just two BBs. Another solid outing from him tonight and I may just declare him the winner of the Cy Young Award next year. I kid.
Zach McKinstry leads off tonight playing second, Ian Happ is in left, Franmil Reyes is DH, Yan Gomes is catching, and David Bote is at third. Alfonso Rivas is at first, Nelson Velázquez is in right, Michael Hermosillo is in center, and Christopher Morel is at short.
First pitch is scheduled for 5:35pm CT from PNC Park in Pittsburgh, PA.
