Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (10/3/22): Reds 3, Cubs 1 – Late Rally Falls Short, Winning Streak Ends at Seven
The Chicago Cubs were 9-1 in their last 10 games, including a seven-game winning streak, coming into tonight’s game in Cincinnati. Unfortunately, their bats went cold tonight and they were unable to extend the streak.
Hayden Wesneski did his part, putting up a quality start by giving up just two runs over six innings. Normally, that would be enough to get a win. The Cubs’ offense was only able to generate two hits and never seriously threatened to score until the 9th.
Manny Rodriguez came on in relief in the bottom of the 8th and gave up two doubles and two walks, costing the Cubs another run, before getting pulled for Erich Uelmen.
The Cubs came into the 9th down 3-0. After two walks to lead off the inning, the Cubs scratched out a run, but that would be all they could manage as they lose the first game of this three-game series. (Box Score)
Why the Cubs Lost
Two hits will rarely earn a win.
Eye on the Future
- Wesneski was solid once again: 6.0 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 4 H, 6 K, 1 BB
Taking Note
- Not much to note tonight except the lack of offense in a hitter-friendly park.
Bottom Line
The Cubs are playing this season out, hoping for a couple more wins to end on a positive note. Their record in the 2nd half is now 38-30, so no matter what happens they will finish with an above .500 record since the All-Star break.
On Deck
Javier Assad will take on Luis Cessa in Cincinnati on Tuesday evening at a game starting at 5:40pm CT.
