Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/27/23): Cubs 6, White Sox 6 – Cubs Jameson Tie One

The Cubs welcomed the White Sox to Sloan Park on Monday for the penultimate game of the Cactus League season Monday afternoon. Their front line players had an excellent performance, but the presumed closer struggles and they gave up the lead late and the contest ended in a tie.

The Cubs did big damage on White Sox starter Mike Clevinger in the bottom of the 1st inning. Ian Happ and Cody Bellinger hit back-to-back RBI singles followed by a Trey Mancini sacrifice fly and an Eric Hosmer double put the home team ahead 4-0.

Jameson Taillon was terrific in his final start before the regular season, going five innings and only allowed three runners to reach base. Dansby Swanson hit his second home run in as many days in the 2nd inning.

Miles Mastrobuoni knocked in a run in the 3rd inning with a single to put the Cubs up 6-0. Everything was going smoothly up to the 9th when Michael Fulmer imploded and the White Sox scored five times to tie the game. The North Siders failed to score in the bottom of the frame and the game ended 6-6. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Tied

Fulmer just did not have it on Monday. It’s not what you want to see from a member of the big league bullpen going against mostly minor league hitters.

Stats That Matter

  • Taillon was very sharp on Monday: 5 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 5 K, and 0 BB.
  • Swanson drew a walk as well as the homer and scored twice.
  • Nico Hoerner had a base hit and looks like he’s fully recovered from his bicep injury.

Bottom Line

All of the Cubs’ roster moves have basically been decided at this point and everyone is ready for the season to begin. It seems like Swanson is getting hot at the right time.

On Deck

The Cubs wrap up the exhibition season Tuesday at 2:05pm CT against these same White Sox at Sloan Park. Drew Smyly gets his final tuneup and the game is airing on Marquee.
