Cubs Reinstate Yan Gomes from Concussion IL, Option Miguel Amaya

This may upset the folks who were saying the Cubs should have kept Miguel Amaya and ditched Tucker Barnhart, but that was never going to happen. Here’s the press release on the move…

The Chicago Cubs today activated catcher Yan Gomes from the 7-day concussion injured list and optioned catcher Miguel Amaya to Triple-A Iowa.

Gomes, 35, was placed on the I.L. May 3 (retroactive to May 2) and at the time was hitting .294 (20-for-68) with one double, five home runs, 13 RBI and a .529 slugging percentage in 19 games with the Cubs. Chicago pitchers have a 2.98 ERA with him behind the dish.

Gomes signed with Chicago in December of 2021 and last season played in 86 games for the Cubs. He threw out 16 of 53 baserunners looking to steal, a 30.2 percent success rate that ranked second among N.L. catchers with at least 50 opportunities (J.T. Realmuto, 41.5 percent).

The right-handed hitting Gomes owns a career .247 average (827-for-3,351) with 171 doubles, eight triples, 130 home runs and 460 RBI in 987 career games with Toronto (2012), Cleveland (2013-18), Washington (2019-21), Oakland (2021) and the Cubs. He earned an A.L. Silver Slugger award in 2014 and was named to the A.L. All-Star Team in 2018 with Cleveland prior to joining the Nationals and helping the club to the 2019 World Series title.

Amaya, 24, made his major league debut with the Cubs after he was recalled from Double-A Tennessee on May 2. In six games, the right-handed hitter batted .231 (3-for-13) with two RBI.
