Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/21/23): Phillies 2, Cubs 1 – Morel Homers Again for Only Offense
The Cubs attempted to end a difficult road trip on a positive note Sunday in Philadelphia and got a terrific starting pitching performance. Unfortunately, most of their hitters completely no-showed and the Phillies took the series.
Justin Steele and Taijuan Walker were both sharp Sunday and neither team could score through six innings. The Phillies took the lead when Bryson Stott launched a pinch-hit two-run homer off of Adbert Alzolay in the 7th inning.
Christopher Morel continued his amazing season with his eighth home run in 11 games, which came against Craig Kimbrel with two outs in the top of the 9th. The former Cubs closer got the next out, however, and Philadelphia sealed the 2-1 victory. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Cubs once again saw their bullpen give up runs in a high-leverage situation. It seems to be the same result no matter who they try to use in those roles.
Why the Cubs Lost
They had just three hits Sunday and only had more than one runner on base in just one inning the whole game. Pretty hard to win any games with that little offense.
Stats That Matter
- Steele deserved much better for his great performance: 6 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 6 K, and 1 BB.
- Mike Tauchman drew a pair of walks starting in center field Sunday.
Bottom Line
That road trip was a complete disaster for the Cubs. They just could not keep up with more talented teams and are in danger of totally falling out of the race. Morel’s unbelievable performance is one of the only bright spots for Chicago right now. This upcoming homestand is absolutely critical if they want to remain in the hunt this season.
