Cubs Select Jared Young from AAA, Option Miles Mastrobuoni
The Chicago Cubs today selected infielder Jared Young from Triple-A Iowa and optioned infielder Miles Mastrobuoni to Iowa. To make room on the 40-man roster for Young, left-handed pitcher Brandon Hughes has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Young, 27, is hitting .326 (56-for-172) with seven doubles, one triple, 13 home runs, 45 RBI, 29 walks, a .426 on-base percentage and a 1.031 OPS in 52 games for Iowa this season. The left-handed hitter has posted a .349 average (46-for-132) with 12 home runs and a 1.150 OPS against right-handed pitching this season and owns a .333 average (20-for-60) and a .413 OBP with runners in scoring position. Young this season has appeared at first base (28 games), left field (12 games), third base (four games) and right field (two games), as well as five games as designated hitter.
The six-foot tall Young made his major league debut as a September call-up for Chicago in 2022, hitting .263 (5-for-19) with two doubles and a .364 on-base percentage in six games. He spent most of the season with Iowa, playing a team-high 109 games while he ranked third in home runs (17) and RBI (59) while batting .230 (92-for-400) with 39 extra-base hits.
Selected by Chicago in the 15th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Old Dominion University, the left-handed batting Young is a career .267 (499-for-1,869) hitter with 89 doubles, 15 triples, 61 home runs and 292 RBI in 515 career minor league games spanning six seasons. He was the Cubs Minor League Player of the Year in 2018, combining to hit .300 (134-for-477) with an .842 OPS in 120 games between Single-A South Bend and Myrtle Beach.
Mastrobuoni, 27, is hitting .145 (9-for-62) with two doubles, one RBI and six stolen bases in 29 games for Chicago this season.
Hughes, 27, was placed on the 15-day injured list June 12 with left knee inflammation.
