Cubs Planning to Remove Trey Mancini from Roster

We’ve been writing about this as the best move for the roster, and now it looks like the Cubs agree. As Bleacher Nation’s Michael Cerami tweeted Tuesday afternoon, the team is planning to remove Trey Mancini from the roster via either DFA or release.

Mancini has struggled all year and this move become all too logical once the acquisition of Jeimer Candelario necessitated a spot on the active roster. Exactly how the Cubs go about making it happen will surely be up to Mancini, who they’ll still owe around $10 million on the two-year deal he signed in January. It’s unlikely there’s a trade to be made and Mancini probably won’t want to accept an assignment, so a release seems like the most plausible route.

He’s a great guy by all accounts and there was a lot of hope at the time of his signing that he’d fill some of the Cubs’ needs, but things don’t always work out the way you’d hope. Best of luck to him in whatever comes next.

Update: Mancini has been DFA’d to clear room for Candelario.
