Brennen Davis Carted Off Field Following Apparent Ankle Injury

Brennen Davis has faced numerous injury setbacks throughout his promising career, and Tuesday’s may determine his future in the Cubs organization. The outfielder missed nearly three months with a back fracture and returned to the Iowa Cubs in late August with the hope of finishing the season on a high note. He took a step in the right direction with a monster 445-foot homer on Sunday night, then took a step in the wrong direction Tuesday night.

After smashing a liner into the gap in left-center, Davis slid awkwardly and was tagged out trying to stretch a single. I-Cubs staff came out to check on his left ankle and he was carted off the field. This almost certainly ends his season and could spell the end of his Cubs tenure as the club can’t use the 60-day IL to keep a roster spot open during the offseason.

It’s just awful news for a player who is such a good guy in addition to having loads of potential. He won’t turn 25 until November 2 and could very well have plenty of baseball left, but the Cubs may feel it’s best for him to pursue other opportunities. Or maybe they’ll find a way to keep him in the organization even if he’s removed from the roster.

That doesn’t seem likely, as they’ve already got three outfielders locked up in Chicago for at least two more years and have two other top prospects ready to ascend soon. Whatever happens, I really hope Davis is able to stay healthy and make good on that potential regardless of the uniform he’s wearing.

Unless it’s a Cardinals uniform.

Update: According to Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register, Davis suffered a broken lower leg. No timetable for his recovery has been announced, but suffice to say it’ll be several weeks before he can resume baseball activities.
