Quick Look at CI’s 2024 Results
Just for funsies, I wanted to look back at what we were able to do this year. Our stable of writers published 1,169 total articles that garnered around 2.5 million pageviews. That’s down about 12% and 28% from last year, which makes sense given the proliferation of Cubs outlets across the media landscape. There seem to be at least 5-6 new blogs out there each year, so we appreciate that your continued patronage allows us to keep putting gas in our cars. Yes, even if it means I’ve got to opt for mid-grade rather than premium.
Things get a little more depressing when you consider that we saw roughly 6.8 million pageviews in 2019. That pace continued through March of 2020, and I don’t think I have to remind you of what happened then. I can’t speak for the rest of the industry, but I know we never recovered from MLB’s shutdown and the Cubs’ lack of success since then. Woof.
Back to this year, where rumors once again drove a lot of traffic. January, February, and December were our biggest months as potential free-agent deals and actual moves brought in the eyeballs. Cody Bellinger was a big part of that, so at least we got some value out of his deal even if the Cubs didn’t. Perhaps the funniest successful piece was the one about Mark McGwire wearing Cubs gear to support his son, a pitching prospect in the organization.
Another popular post that upset a few people was how Christopher Morel not being at CubsCon raised suspicions of a potential trade. How’d that end up?
I’m pressed for time here so I’ll go ahead and leave you here with warm wishes for the best in the new year. Thanks again for being here and keeping this thing rolling over the last decade-plus, and here’s to hoping the Cubs do something to get us back to covering a more interesting team that people want to ready about.
