Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (2/27/25): Cubs 4, Angels 4 – Fit to Be Tied Again

The Cubs took on the Angels at Sloan Park on Thursday afternoon and the game ended in a tie for the second straight day. Chicago rallied to erase an early deficit, but the bullpen gave up the lead in the 9th inning to facilitate the draw.

Jordan Wicks got the start on Thursday and gave up a 1st inning home run to White Sox legend Tim Anderson. Los Angeles added a second run on an RBI groundout in the 2nd to make it 2-0.

The Cubs hitters finally came to life in the bottom of the 5th, beginning with an RBI double by Dansby Swanson. Catcher Carson Kelly then singled Swanson home to even the score at two.

It appeared as if the North Siders were going to pull out a victory when Jonathon Long cracked a two-run double in the bottom of the 8th to bring the score to 4-2. The Angels were not going to give up that easily, however, as Kyren Paris crushed a long two-run homer to left in the 9th that deadlocked the game at four. The Cubs failed to score in their half of the frame and the contest ended in a tie. (Box score)

Key Moment

Brooks Kriske was one out away from closing out the win, but his pitch got too much of the plate and he paid the price for it by surrendering a home run.

Why the Cubs Tied

Both teams got clutch hits from young players late in the game to force a tie.

Stats That Matter

  • Wicks still struggles with being efficient in his outings but had his changeup working Thursday: 2.2 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 3 K, and 0 BB.
  • Closer Ryan Pressly was very sharp in a clean inning with a pair of strikeouts.
  • Swanson made an excellent backhanded play on a ground ball deep in the hole in the 2nd inning, which he basically makes look routine.

Bottom Line

The time has come to debate whether or not the Cubs are going to go undefeated this season. All joking aside, things are moving along nicely this spring as Chicago gets ready for the trip to Japan.

On Deck

The Cubs take another trip to Surprise for a matchup against the Texas Rangers on Friday at 2:05pm CT. Justin Steele makes the start in a game that is not televised anywhere.
