Cubs DFA Dan Winkler, Outright Kyle Ryan, Select Michael Hermosillo from AAA
The Cubs made a few more roster moves Tuesday as they look to find players who might be part of the future beyond October. That meant designating Dan Winkler for assignment after a string of rough outings that brought his ERA up to 10.42 in the time since MLB announced it would be cracking down on sticky substances. In other pitching moves, lefty Kyle Ryan elected free agency after being outrighted. After 73 appearances in 2019, Ryan has been very inconsistent and wasn’t able to maintain a spot on the roster.
Rather than replace either with another pitcher, the Cubs have selected the contract of outfielder Michael Hermosillo from Triple-A Iowa. The 26-year-old has been tearing it up for Iowa, batting .310 with a 1.048 OPS and playing excellent defense at all three outfield spots. Hermosillo has a little MLB experience over each of the past three seasons with the Angels, hitting .188 with one homer in 101 at-bats.
The athletic right-handed hitter should bring a little excitement to what has otherwise been a dead team walking, and he might even earn himself a starting role. Given how the primary outfielders not named Rafael Ortega have been playing, Hermosillo will be a welcome sight out there.
