James Triantos to Miss 6-8 Weeks Following Knee Surgery
Welp, this sucks.
According to a report from Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune, Cubs infield prospect James Triantos underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair the meniscus in his right knee and will be shelved for 6-8 weeks. A second-round pick in 2021, Triantos put up eye-popping numbers as a hitter and pitcher in high school and has acquitted himself well in pro ball despite being about two years younger than on average than the rest of the competition at each level.
Over 504 plate appearances as a 19-year-old with Low-A Myrtle Beach, he batted .272 with a .721 OPS that included seven home runs. His performance improved throughout the season and many had tabbed Triantos to have a breakout season in South Bend this year. That could still happen, of course, we’ll just have to wait until June or so to see it.
Even if we assume his recovery falls at the short end of the estimate, it could be early May before Triantos is cleared to resume full baseball activity. He’ll likely remain in Arizona throughout the rehab process, so he’ll be able to participate in games down there to prep for a return to affiliated ball. If he’s able to come back quickly, he could easily make good on that No. 12 ranking in MLB Pipeline’s latest update.
