Cubs Quick Hits: Javy Baez Crushing Pitches in May

Perhaps trying to do too much after rising to stardom in the World Baseball Classic, Javy Baez went into May with a contact rate hovering around 60 percnt. That’s gotten better.

Going into Wednesday’s contest against the Giants, the Cubs’ quick-twitching infielder has only struck out in 15.9 percent of his plate appearances this month, which has contributed to a stellar .403 wOBA in May.

However, Baez is still swinging at 40 percent of pitches he sees outside the zone. He’s making pitchers pay when they throw him strikes, but just imagine a world in which Baez narrows his zone and maintains that contact rate.
