Report: Cubs Signing Pitcher Kendall Graveman

As we continue to monitor whether or not the Cubs will be chasing the big free agent fish this offseason, we have another smaller move to report. ESPN’s Jesse Rogers is reporting that the Cubs are nearing a deal with pitcher Kendall Graveman, who’s been with the Athletics the past four season.

(I’m sure Bruce means $3 million…)

Graveman underwent Tommy John surgery on July 24, 2018, so this signing will naturally remind you of the Drew Smyly deal last season. Graveman likely will not be a factor in the 2019 season, but he offers solid depth potential once he completes the rehab process. Graveman debuted with the Blue Jays in 2014 and all told has tossed 446.0 MLB innings, with a 4.38 ERA/4.54 FIP. Similar to Smyly, if the rehab goes smoothly, Graveman can represent a solid back-end of the rotation arm or an interesting bullpen candidate if he ultimately makes a switch.
