Cubs vs Rockies Series Preview (August 23-25): TV and Game Info, Starting Pitchers, Insights

The Cubs are very bad, but you’re already well aware of that fact if you’ve been watching their games lately. To quantify that awfulness they have lost 15 of their last 17 games as a bare-bones lineup and a shredded bullpen have dropped the bottom out of Chicago’s season.

The next opponent for the Cubs’ tank parade is the Colorado Rockies, who took two of three in Denver when these two teams met at the start of August. The Rox are truly terrible on the road with a ghastly 14-45 record.

This is a series where the stoppable force meets the movable object. Someone has to win these games — that’s how baseball works, it’s in the rulebook — and it’s hard not to bet on the Cubs to lose in this scenario. Then again, the Rockies have been almost as bad on the road this season as the Cubs have been since the deadline.

I know most of the people reading this are sick of losing and, as you can tell by the tone of this article, I am tired of writing about a losing team. But at some point in the next five weeks, something fun will happen with the Cubs. Maybe it’s a great effort by one of the young pitchers, a miracle comeback fueled by previously unknown hitters, or, best of all, knocking the Cardinals out of the playoffs.

Maybe I’m naïve, but that is what is keeping me watching.

What to Watch For

  • Steele wasn’t the sharpest in his last start as he continues to get his feet wet as a major league starting pitcher.
  • Márquez was often involved in trade rumors heading up to the deadline and could be an offseason target for the Cubs if they choose an aggressive rebuild.
  • Davies has allowed 25 runs over his last five starts, 22 of which were earned.
