Cubs Roster Update: Robertson Placed on IL, Schwindel Recalled, Taxi Squad Deployed

Frank Schwindel was optioned to Iowa moments before yesterday’s lineup was released by the Chicago Cubs. Once again, just moments after the lineup was released, the Chicago Cubs are making a few more roster moves.

The surprisingly effective 37-year-old RHP David Robertson has been placed on the IL with no designation (read: COVID related). And Schwindel is back on the team and in the lineup less than 24 hours after being optioned.

Adrian Sampson, who was selected yesterday from Iowa due to Marcus Stroman‘s non-designated trip to the IL, has been optioned to Iowa. The Cubs have selected LHP Conner Menez from Iowa to take Sampson’s place.

This is pretty clearly a COVID-related outbreak, hence the addition of RHP Mark Leiter, IF Ildemaro Vargas, and C P.J. Higgins to the Cubs taxi squad in San Diego.

Per COVID protocols, players can be added to the active roster without being added to the 40-man roster if they are replacing a player who is out due to COVID-related reasons.

It’s only May 9, folks. Grab something secure and hold on tightly. It’s getting very bumpy.
