Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/10/22): Yankees 2, Cubs 1 F/13 – Extra-Inning Loss Haunted by Ghost Runners

The Cubs traveled to New York to meet old friend Anthony Rizzo and the Yankees Friday night. Chicago did an excellent job keeping New York off the scoreboard but they could not generate any offense and dropped a marathon 13-inning affair.

Both starting pitchers were on top of their games early, trading zeros through the first three innings. Unfortunately, Cubs starter Wade Miley appeared to re-injure his left shoulder while warming up for the 4th inning and had to come out of the game.

Former Cubs farmhand Gleyber Torres jumped all over the first pitch thrown by Daniel Norris and homered to right field. The much-maligned Jason Heyward surprisingly took Luis Severino deep for the game-tying solo home run to left in the 5th, which coincidentally came on the same nightClint Frazier was designated for assignment.

The bullpens were outstanding for both sides and the game remained tied into extra innings. Neither team could cash in numerous scoring chances with the free runner on second until the 13th, when Jose Trevino lined a pinch-hit single off Alec Mills to walk off the 2-1 Yankees victory. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Lost

The Cubs offense did nothing to help a bullpen that did yeoman’s work to keep their team in the game.

Key Moment

Chicago went 0-for-18 with men in scoring position and especially in extra innings when they did not record a hit.

Stats That Matter

  • Miley lasted three innings and allowed no runs on three hits before leaving with the shoulder injury.
  • Heyward responded to the fresh round of criticism with a home run and a double.
  • Rizzo went 0-for-4 in his first game against the Cubs and was unsurprisingly hit by a pitch.

Bottom Line

The hitters currently on the roster are just not good enough to consistently win games and the front office is going to have to significantly upgrade their position players if they want to contend again. Miley’s injury issues may hurt the team’s ability to trade him and make those upgrades easier.

On Deck

Game two of the series is Saturday night at 6:15pm CT. Matt Swarmer makes his third start against lefty Jordan Montgomery in a game airing exclusively on FOX.
